A RHINO CHARGE FOR CONSERVATION

World famous race raises money for rhino conservation

A rhino charge is one of the most fearsome, impressive things to witness in the wild, showcasing the animal’s speed and power. The Rhino Charge is no less impressive or powerful even though no actual rhinos are involved.

World famous

The Rhino Charge is a world famous off-road challenge organised every year in Kenya to raise money for rhino conservation.

A unique sporting event, the race is widely acknowledged as one of the most demanding tests of driving skills and physical endurance anywhere in the world.

Raising Money

In its 22nd year, the Rhino Charge will be raising money for the maintenance of the 400km Aberdare Forest fence as well as increased support for effective ecosystem management.

Completed on August 28 last year, the fence helps conserve the forest habitat and water catchment area as well as protecting neighbouring farms from wildlife invasion.

Race for Sponsorship

For many months now, the participants of up to six individuals in each vehicle have been enlisting the support of friends, running fund-raising parties, presenting to companies, hosting 4X4 off-road stunt events and lobbying for support from friends and donors abroad.

Secret

Clerk of the Course Anton Levitan said: “Preparation of vehicles, equipment and crew for the Rhino Charge is complete. This year’s event is fully-subscribed and will be held on a track of uncharted wilderness somewhere in Kenya. The exact location will remain a secret till the day of the race.”

Match the Funding

Rhino Ark Chairman Colin Church said: “Whilst fully committed to maintenance and management of the Aberdare eco-system, Rhino Ark believes their fund-raising efforts need now to be matched by the Government and other conservation bodies in a public-private partnership for the long-term conservation of the Aberdare National Park.”
