ActionAid reports Slumdog child sponsorship surge
Last week, SOS Children’s Villages reported an increase in interest in sponsoring indian children following the huge success of Slumdog Millionaire at the BAFTAs and Oscars.
It appears that other child sponsorship charities such as Plan and ActionAid are also experiencing increased interest in helping Indian children.
ActionAid’s Richard Turner said: “We’re calling it the slumdog effect. We haven’t seen such a high level of interest in one country for a long time.”
In a typical week, ActionAid receive around 500 child sponsorship enquiries a week. However, in the week after the BAFTAs that number was 1,400 with a large proportion specifically regarding Indian children.
The increased trend has continued after the film’s success at the Oscars.
Commenting on the impact of child sponsorship, Richard Turner said: “Child sponsorship has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and is one of the most rewarding ways of giving.”
