2008 Chinese earthquake predicted to affect giant panda breeding
As reported on Goallover.org last week, the 2008 Chinese earthquake that devastated vast areas of the giant panda’s mountain bamboo habitat was only responsible for a single panda death.
However, Chinese conservationists are now predicting a more insidious impact as the unsettled panda population suffers a drop in their collective sex drive.
Panda’s are notoriously fussy when it comes to reproduction and the disruption caused by the earthquake is predicted to lead to significant drop in the number of wild pandas born in the coming years.
Conservationists are particularly disappointed because they had been experiencing great recent success, especially with captive breeding programmes, which had seen a record 25 births in 2007.
WWF is campaigning to save the habitat of the last wild giant pandas.
