SEVENTH ELEPHANT DEATH AT RESERVE IN A YEAR

Seventh elephant in a year found dead at Vietnamese nature reserve.

The 7th Elephant within a year has been found dead at Vinh Cuu nature reserve in Vietnam.

According to the reserve director Tran Van Mui the dead elephant was thought to be three years old, weighed 500kg and died in a private field on the night of May 26 or May 27.

The young elephant is the latest death in a wave of deaths, the seventh wild elephant to have died this year at the reserve; the reasons for these deaths are as of yet unknown. Presently there are only 10 elephants left in Cat Tien National Park and Vinh Cuu Nature Reserve.

Mui has said that in recent years wild elephant herds have regularly attacked residential areas in Phu My and Ma Da commune in Vinh Cuu Nature Reserve during the dry season, bringing local people into conflict with the elephants. A conflict that may have turned deadly.
