Palm oil encroachment blamed for increasing human-animal conflict
A rare Sumatran elephant has been poisoned and killed by a group of people in the Tamiang Hulu area of Aceh province in Indonesia.
Gang of 10
The 15 year old elephant was killed by the gang of 10 on a palm oil plantation last month. It has been confirmed by local wildlife officials that the group subsequently removed the tusks and dumped the elephants chopped up carcass into a river. A team will make further investigations later this month.
Encroachment
The smallest of the world’s elephants, there are thought to be only 2400-2800 Sumatran elephants left in Indonesia. Increasingly elephants and tigers are coming into conflict with local people as palm oil plantations rapidly encroach on the remaining forest.
