HAITI EMAIL SCAM STEALS CHARITY PHOTO

Bogus charity attempts to cash in on Haiti disaster

A plagiarised image of an SOS Children’s camp has been used as part of a bogus charity email scam attempting to cash in on the Haiti Crisis.

Not only was the image used without the permission of the charity, but it showed tents in one of their earlier missions in Kashmir in 2005.

Andrew Cates, SOS Children’s chief executive, said: “The picture had tents with our brand. It is our picture so we have the copyright.”

“The tents were not in Haiti but were ones put up in Kashmir after the earthquake there in 2005.”

A BBC investigation uncovered a scam involving a group calling itself the M E Foundation, which is not registered with the Charity Commission.

Mr Cates said: “The scam email claimed they were in Haiti.”

“Somebody who pretends to be helping is stealing from the children of Haiti. If money is not going to us, unquestionably there is more human suffering.”

Mr Cates urged people to continue donating to the Haiti earthquake appeal via SOS Children’s Villages and pointed people to the Charity Commission’s website which lists all official charity sites.
