Indonesian man killed in Asian elephant stampede – deforestation blamed
An 83-year-old man was killed yesterday after a herd of Asian elephants stampeded through an Indonesian village.
Over 90% of Indonesia’s rainforest has been cleared by logging companies and for agriculture, especially for palm oil plantations.
As forests shrink and human activity encroaches on traditional wildlife habitat, endangered animal species such as tigers, orangutans and elephants struggle to find food and often leave the forest to raid crops or livestock.
Under such circumstances, human-wildlife conflict incidents such as the above are inevitable.
The Indonesian Natural Resource Conservation Agency is sending a team to investigate the incident and called on villagers not to retaliate by trying to kill the elephants.
However, human-wildlife conflict areas are often remote and by the time wildlife team arrive it is often to late.
And even if wildlife authorities are able to intervene and capture so called ‘problem animals’, they are running out of suitable habitat to move captured animals into.
