NESTLE GIVE IN TO PRESSURE OVER PALM OIL

Nestle drops controversial Sinar Mas Group after protests at HQ.

Yesterday brought a climax to a recent campaign by conservation group Greenpeace against Nestle. Protesters scaled the walls of the company’s Croydon headquarters dressed as orang-utans and a report was released damning the practices of one of their palm oil suppliers, the Sinar Mas Group.

Today, Nestle released a statement saying it has replaced Sinar Mas with another supplier for further shipments after conducting its own investigations into its palm oil supply chain.

“We will continue to pressure our suppliers to eliminate any sources of palm oil which are related to rainforest destruction and to provide valid guarantees of traceability as quickly as possible,” Nestle said in the statement.

Anglo-Dutch Unilever, the world’s largest user of palm oil, said in December it had suspended purchases from Sinar Mas on similar concerns. Their announcement followed an investigation by BBC’s Panorama that exposed the damage done to local flora and fauna in the harvesting of palm oil.

Sinar Mas was not immediately available for comment. It has previously denied that its activities are damaging for the environment and in December it invited Unilever to inspect its operations.

Nestle has said that by 2015 it aims to only use palm oil that is certified as sustainable.
