NEW BREEDING SANCTUARY FOR CHINESE EARTHQUAKE PANDAS
6 baby pandas, survivors of the Chinese earthquake, have a new home.
Six baby giant pandas, survivors of the May 2008 Chinese earthquake, have found a new home.
The Bifengxia panda breeding centre in Sichuan provides sanctuary for three male and three female cubs that were abandoned after the 7.9 magnitude earthquake destroyed virtually all of the Wolong panda reserve, the most important in China.
One panda and five park workers were killed in the earthquake.
The six cubs have been reunited with fifty other adult panda survivors which will remain at Bifengxia until a new panda sanctuary is built at Wolong.

WWF estimates that just 1,600 pandas remain in the wild and numbers are in decline as a result of habitat destruction and fragmentation.
