RSPB SAVING THE ALBATROSS

RSPB project brings new hope to albatross conservation

WANDERING ALBATROSSA Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) scheme has brought new optimism to conservation battles to save the albatross.

Long-line fishing techniques, used to catch predatory fish such as tuna and swordfish, have pushed most albatross species to the brink of extinction. The birds try and grab the fish bait used on the long-lines and end up hooked on the line.

The Albatross Task Force project was set up in 2006 by the RSPB and pilot studies in South Africa have yielded  a remarkable 85% reduction in fatalities.

The most effective deterrent is brightly coloured streamers attached to trawler sterns which flap in the wind and scare birds away as the baited lines are put in the water. Other deterrents include launching lines at night and line weights.

The RSPB now intends to roll the initiative out to other Southern Hemisphere fishing nations. A spokesperson said:

“Changing entrenched attitudes and practices is a slow process, but we’ve shown that by working with government and industry, change is possible.”

The scheme also now has royal support – the Prince of Wales, well known for his conservation beliefs, is holding a reception at Clarence House in London in recognition of the initiative.
