SOS Children’s Villages want no Haiti donations diverted to the UK.
SOS Children’s Villages are seeking greater support from other charities for their campaign of “no deductions for Haiti.”
The charity wants other NGOs in Haiti to follow their lead and ensure that none of the money that is being donated towards the Haitian relief effort is diverted to pay for UK expenses.
Although their pledge has received great support from the public, as evidenced but the rapidly increasing number of signatures on their petition, as yet no other organisations have signed up.
The extensive press coverage of the disaster has led numerous sources to provide their help for no charge. The G7 have agreed to grant debt relief, while various performers and service providers have offered to work for free to help the people of Haiti.
SOS Children’s Villages offer an explanation of the request on their website: “Most charities will have already fixed their annual budgets when the disaster struck on January 12 and major media partners gave free publicity.”
“As responsible UK NGOs we all owe it to the British public and to the people of Haiti not to use this unexpected collection of millions of pounds to pay for what we in the UK would be doing anyway.”
According to the Third Sector, a representative of the Institute of Fundraising (which represents some of the biggest junk mailing charities in the UK): “People generally realise that investing in additional appeals is rightly funded by donations.”
If people were made aware that some of their donations were not reaching Haiti at all, then they may not be as understanding as the Third Sector believe they would be.
