Obama says No We Can’t to the Polar Bears
Barack Obama may be receiving universal praise across the world, but he isn’t very popular with conservationists after saying “no we can’t” to a ruling that would have helped save polar bears.
Conservationists wanted to use the US Endangered Species Act to force the US government to take action against climate change which threatens polar bears with extinction due to the disappearance of their arctic habitat.
One of George W Bush’s last rulings before leaving office was to stop this action and since the inauguration of Barack Obama, conservationists have been calling for a reversal of policy. However, the Obama administration recently decided against this action.
The interior secretary, Ken Salazar, said: “To see the polar bear habitat melting and an iconic species threatened is a tragedy of the modern age, but the endangered species act is not the best mechanism for cutting down on climate change.”
Conservationists must now place their faith in the administration’s general pledges to take action on climate change.
WWF is campaigning to protect the the polar bear’s habitat.
