Police find tiger cub hidden in plastic box on way to customer
A two month old tiger cub is recuperating at the Phu Khiew Wildlife Reserve after being seized from smugglers attempting to take it to a customer in southern Thailand.
The two alleged members of a tiger trading gang have been initially charged with illegal possession of protected wildlife and smuggling an endangered animal with intent to sell it.
Police at a checkpoint stopped a black pickup in which the two men were travelling. A search of the car found the 10kg cub hidden in a plastic box.
The pair confessed to police they had brought the cub from Laos and were on the way to deliver it to a customer in the South.
Chaiyaphum police chief Pol MajGeneral Sathit Tachayapop was not satisfied with merely arresting those caught carrying the cub and ordered investigators to find the influential figures believed to be backing activity such as this.
They believe that there must have been people who helped the men get the tiger cub through the border checkpoint in Nong Khai.
After being seized police feared the ‘exhaused’ animal might die, and it is not recovering safely in the Wildlife Reserve.
