WWF call recent figures an “encouraging milestone” for conservation
March 2010 saw a record amount of sustainably produced palm oil being purchased from palm oil producers according to figures released by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
Encouraging Milestone
136,000 tonnes of palm oil was purchased last month, exceeding the 126,000 tonnes produced in the same month. The WWF say that these numbers may point to a turnaround from previous trends that found only small percentage of sustainable palm oil was being purchased from palm oil producers. Sales have been steadily increasing over the last few months and WWF’s Leader for Palm Oil, Cherie Tan says that the charity sees last month’s record figures as an “encouraging milestone on the journey to a marketplace where sustainable palm oil becomes the norm”.
The Scorecard
Uptake of sustainable palm oil was 95% in the first quarter of 2010 according to the RSPO. Since 2008 more that 1.8 million tonnes of RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil has been produced, of this close to 0.7 million tonnes were purchased for use by consumer goods manufacturers and retailers. In October 2009 the WWF published the Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard shaming many European palm oil buyers, including major supermarkets, by showing that the majority failed to purchase sustainable palm oil despite its availability and previous commitments to use it.
Immediate Threat
The fastest expanding crop in Southeast Asia, palm oil has become an immediate threat to the world’s remaining rainforests and inhabiting wildlife, such as orangutans and tigers. Deforestation and draining of peatlands for plantations are also contributing to climate change and leading to the displacement of local people who live alongside and rely upon the forest. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil was set up in 2003 to help combat these issues providing certified sustainable palm oil since November 2008 and the assurance that rainforest has not been cleared and environmental safeguards met.
Sending a Message
Increasing sustainable palm oil sales send producers the message that there is a steadily growing market for the sustainable growth of the crop and that it is in their interests to secure certificates for their land holdings as soon as possible.
