RSPB RAISES CONCERNS OVER WORLD’S BIGGEST WIND FARM

RSPB highlights risk from the world’s largest wind farm in the Thames

WIND FARM The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has expressed concern over the go-ahead yesterday for the world’s largest windfarm.

The wind farm will see 341 giant turbines raised in a 90 sq mile area of the Thames Estuary near London. Collectively the 100 metre high turbines will generate 1,000 megawatt of energy, enough to power up to million homes.

Some environment groups such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth have welcomed the project. However, the RSPB has raised concerns about the scale of the project and its effects on bird populations.

Windfarms are responsible for large numbers of bird deaths particularly on migration routes where birds are tired and are at risk of being caught in the turbine blades which can be almost 200 metres in diameter.
