SAVE THE RHINO RESPONDS TO CRITICISM

Save the Rhino Director, Cathy Dean, on support from trophy hunting

Save the Rhino would like to respond to the article that originally appeared in The Sunday Times, regarding the trophy hunting of rhinos, elements of which were published on goallover.org earlier today.

As our official statement on the Save the Rhino International website makes clear, we have held this view for many years, even before we began to work with and receive grants from Safari Club International.

When the Trustees discussed that potential relationship, we considered the potential implications very carefully, and consulted with the field programmes that we exist to support, and by and large they are all in favour of sustainable use policies.

When The Sunday Times article appeared, of course we re-examined our position, and re-consulted the field organisations, and the over-riding feeling is still the same.

Please see their responses here.

We understand that many people find the notion of shooting an animal for sport or pleasure unacceptable, and we fully respect those views.

Animal welfare (as opposed to conservation) often provokes personal reactions as strong as those about politics or religion.

I do hope you will at least read the response from us, and from some of the field programmes we support, so that you may consider the other side of the argument; however we are not expecting you to change your opinions.

As Raoul du Toit (Director, The Lowveld Rhino Trust in Zimbabwe)’s statement on our website makes clear, there are problems within the hunting system.

But then, you could say the same of drivers, for example: 99% may be careful, responsible drivers, and 1% are reckless and endanger lives – that doesn’t mean that you should ban all driving, surely, just that you deal with the bad ones.

I do believe that SCI is a responsible organisation and that it is working to curb the ills of the hunting industry.

As we continue to work with them, I will certainly be asking them what actions they are taking to stamp out bad practice, and will encourage them to publicise their work in this respect.
