SOS REUNITING FAMILIES IN HAITI

SOS have reunited 65 children in Haiti since the earthquake

SOS Children’s Villages will say a happy farewell to the 33 children they have cared for since the authorities caught 10 US citizens attempting to smuggle them out of the country, with all of them set to be reunited with their families.

Following the arrest of ten US nationals who attempted to transport the children to the Dominican Republic under dubious circumstances, Haiti’s child welfare authority IBERS (The Institut du Bien Etre Sociale et De Recherches) placed the children in the Santo SOS Children’s Village.

Since January 30th they have been provided with medical and social care, as well as psychological help from professionals and SOS social workers. During their stay, all 33 children participated in the daily life of the SOS Children’s Village and have been integrated into a household

After a lengthy process of family verification handled by IBERS, the children, aged four months to twelve years, will now return to their families.

Celigny Darius, National Director of SOS Children’s Villages in Haiti, explained how SOS seek to always bring families back together, even if though parents might not be able to guarantee the same level as care as the charity’s villages offer:

“It has turned out that all of the 33 children have parents and SOS Children’s Villages is convinced that in most cases, the best place for a child to be cared for and protected is within the family,”

“Poverty and lacking resources must not be allowed to be the cause for separation. We are therefore very supportive of the decision of the Haitian authorities to reunite these children with their biological families.”

After the children are reunited with their families, SOS Children’s Villages will be able to provide additional support to that of IBERS and UNICEF, should it be required.

All 400 unaccompanied and orphaned children that have been cared for in the Santo SOS Children’s Village are in the process of being registered in a national database, which will be used to facilitate the tracing of relatives.

Since the earthquake, SOS Children’s Villages has helped reunite 65 children with their families and their measures will ensure that they will be able to bring many more families in Haiti back together in the future.
