WWF preparing to expose UK companies using unsustainable palm oil
WWF is preparing to expose UK companies that use unsustainable palm oil in an effort to safeguard the Indonesian rainforest and its endangered wildlife, including orangutans, tigers and elephants.
The move follows the revelation that less than 2% of the certified sustainable palm oil produced since November 2008 has been bought by manufacturers. The palm oil “buyer’s scorecard” will show which companies are supporting sustainable sources and those that have not fulfilled commitments to buy it.
Carrie Svingen, forest conversion programme coordinator, WWF International said “this will show what companies are doing and motivate some more activity in the market.”
Palm oil is widely used in processed foods and cosmetic products and is increasingly used a biofuel. Oil palm plantations are often developed on cleared areas of rainforest leading to large scale loss of biodiversity including endangered species such as orangutans, tigers and elephants.
WWF facilitated the creation of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2002 to develop sources of certified sustainable palm oil – oil which had been produced without clear cutting rainforest.
Under the RSPO certified sustainable palm oil has developed well and since November 2008, 1.3 million tonnes of has been available. However, only 15,000 tonnes have been bought according to WWF.
