90% reduction in Ionian Sea ‘common’ dolphins due to overfishing
WWF is warning of the local extinction of the ironically named common dolphin in the Ionian Sea between Greece and Italy, where numbers have fallen from 150 to just 15 in the previous decade.
Giorgos Paximadis of WWF Greece said “It is called the common dolphin but the problem nowadays in the Mediterranean is that it’s not common at all – it is about to be extinct.”
“Overfishing has caused the destruction of the marine environment and the dramatic decrease of common dolphins. As they are on the top of food web, it shows that the rest of the marine web is not healthy.”
WWF is campaigning for greater protection for the marine environment.
One of the best ways you can help is by adopting a dolphin.
